Gravel Rash

A 2 track funk single (7m 34s) — released December 5th 2005 on Freestyle Records

Melbourne's premier Hammond organ trio Cookin? On 3 Burners finally drop some of their funk fried goodness on Freestyle. Comprising of Hammond clinician Jake Mason, Guitarist Lance Ferguson (also of The Bamboos) and Drummer Ivan Khatchoyan, the trio draw influence from the classic Hammond sounds of Jimmy Smith, Brother Jack McDuff and Grant Green whilst also keeping one eye on the present, and of course the dancefloor. With three internationally acclaimed recordings under their belts and countless performances throughout Australia in the last six years, it's only a matter of time before their infectious sound takes the UK by storm. Whether swinging hard on smokey, late-night blues or laying down some tough fatback organ funk: Cookin? On 3 Burners are bringing the classic Hammond Trio sound to a new, young and enthusiastic audience.'

More explosive funk fare on Freestyle's 7" series, this time from Aussie groovers Cookin' On 3 Burners. Lead cut "Gravel Rash" has a Meters-ish swing, with lashings of Hammond organ to get those heads nodding and feet moving. Personally, I?m preferring flipside "Mango Skin", which works better for my dancefloors thanks to some phatter breaks and funkier guitars. It goes without saying, though, that both tracks are excellent. 4/5 - Matt Anniss IDJ
