Stay on the Groove

A 2 track funk single (6m 5s) — released November 7th 2005 on Freestyle Records

The New Mastersounds are undoubtedly one of the fiercest and uncompromising raw funk bands to come out of the UK in the last decade. Hailed as 'the only band to cook the funk like The Meters' by the legendary band's sound engineer, they truly are the keepers of the funk and here deliver 2 more slices of dancefloor dynamite as a sampler for the Freestyle modern funk compilation of the same name. Initially recorded as 'Stay in the Groove' by the Soul Dynamics on a rare funk 45 in the early 1970's, The New Mastersounds have done the unexpected and bettered the original. This version was originally recorded for their debut album 'Keb Darge presents the New Mastersounds' and features the unique vocals of Cleveland Freckleton and Haggis Horns on brass. On the B side we have a frantic uptempo hammond shuffler - another fine example of the band's tenacity to take on classic funk: this time tackling The Blenders 'You Got It All (ain't got no more)'. Taken from the recent 'This Is What We Do' album, this has become a firm favourite with crowds all over the UK, USA & Europe.'

Who?d have thought twenty years ago at the inception of the Acid Jazz, Rare Groove and Funk revival scenes that a band from Yorkshire would rise to be the UK?s leading live exponent of the art? Well, that be the case and Keb Darge?s favourite funkateers have dropped another couple of Hammond led crackers for all those old and new school heads. "Stay On The Groove" follows its own instructions whilst the more subtler repetitive riffing of "You Got It All" gets the vote here. - Found Sounds DJ Mag
